Another year, another exciting CreaTiVe Awards. We are still reminiscencing about our fourth year saluting Bay Area videomakers; the evening was amazing!
The evening began with the VIP reception at the beautiful California Theatre in Downtown San Jose. We’re so lucky to have such a gorgeous venue to host our event. The architecture and décor adds just the right atmosphere for the caliber of our awards show and guests.
Our guest of honor, legendary actor Ed Asner mixed and mingled with our sponsors and guests.
Our two-tiered VIP reception was filled with guests dressed to impress, who enjoyed our catered spread, delicious and generously donated wine, our local jazz ensemble and posed in front of our photo wall. As the bells chimed to signal that the show was about to begin, people slowly made their way into the theatre.
We may be a little biased, but we think the show was FANTASTIC.
As guests filled their seats, Aaron “Squareweezy” Aquino, showcased his DJ skills, which was followed by a quick video intro starring Ed Asner and our Master of Ceremonies, Brian Adams.
And just like that, the show flew by. The audience cheered and applauded the award-winning work of amazing videomakers, was entertained by Rudy Parris’ rendition of “Every Breath You Take” and the song and dance number created by The Studio.
One of the first finalists to win was the College of Adaptive Arts Graduate TV/Film Production Team for their video Best of CAA TV Volume 2. They won the award for CreaTV San Jose TV Series.
CreaTV San Jose’s Executive Director, Suzanne St. John-Crane had this to say:
“When the College of Adaptive Arts won the CreaTiVe Award for Best CreaTV Series, I was reminded of why I do what I do. Where else can a group of adults with differing abilities get their own television series on cable? Making TV isn’t always about the finished product. It’s about the experience of creating, and what it does to the creators… as well as the audience.”
Winning two awards, for Business and Filmmaker: Short, was Child Advocates by Jeff Miller, Jeff Hanley and KLA Tencor. This video aims to help Child Advocates Silicon Valley the story of the kids they serve, who are in the child dependency system.
In the Filmmaker: Feature category, the 2013 CreaTiVe Award went to Lon Lopez for Rock the Block: The Story of the Cactus Club. This video “tells the story of the community of people who came together and made the San Jose music scene a tremendous success as well as helped prove that the little city of San Jose could be a vital place to be, even if the city had other ideas.”
As mentioned above, our honored guest of the evening was the legendary actor, Ed Asner, who received the Leigh Weimers’ Community Champion Award. Because of his passion for the importance of public access channels and free speech, Asner defines what it means to be a community media champion. In 2009, he publicly condemned the actions of Time Warner Cable, Inc., for closing 12 public access studios, operating 14 community channels, in Los Angeles and chastised the Los Angeles City Council for negligence in hoarding franchise fees set aside for public access.
Awards, performances, special guests and more filled the night in Downtown San Jose. These were merely a few of the wonderful highlights.
