Come one, come all for the exclusive release of 3 short documentaries made in our program, Summer Documentary Institute! SDI is a 5-week paid internship program for youth through SJ Works, where they learn the documentary filmmaking process and produce one of their own about an issue important to them. This year, youth focused on issues such as urban agriculture, housing, and the criminal justice system. The videos will be followed by a live Q&A with the filmmakers!
We’ll be live on YouTube for our event on Thursday July 30th from 6:00 – 7:00pm.
Join us for the live Q&A on Zoom around 6:30pm: https://tinyurl.com/y6dgqh5t

SDI is officially back and we aren’t letting anything get in the way! This year we are vivacious and virtual! For those of you who do not know what the Summer Documentary Institute is, it is a 5-week paid internship program for youth, where they learn the documentary filmmaking process and produce one of their own short documentaries about an issue important to them. This is our second year of SDI and we are so excited to continue working with SJ Works and the City of San Jose to bring this program the community!
Here is an update of what’s been going on from our awesome intern Sara!
“The first two weeks of SDI 2020 have been amazing! In week 1, we broke through the awkwardness of introducing ourselves, explored the contents of our super cool media kits, learned about framing, lighting, and the rule of thirds, and we met with a few incredible guest speakers! Week two kicked off with a fun showcase of the interviewing skills that we’ve learned so far, followed by classes about pre-production, examples of the different styles of documentary, and an exciting assignment: to scout locations and capture B-roll from our own neighborhoods! As we begin week three, we’re looking forward to interviewing the inspirational organizations you’ll see in our finished documentaries!”
