Please join us for STAND, the first public screening in a planned CreaTV monthly series. This documentary is about the making of the iconic statue on the San Jose State campus. This is a story about student activism and how the statue actually got made, including interviews with Rigo, the artist, Alfonso DeAlba, Executive Director of Associated Students at the time, and Eric Grotz, the student who came up with the original idea. Also featured is rare footage of the actual work in progress on the campus as it was being made in 2005, as well as footage of Tommie Smith and John Carlos speaking at the unveiling ceremony.
Q&A will be held after the screening with:
Cotton Stevenson- Writer/Director
As a graduate student at SJSU in 2015, Cotton did a thesis paper about student activism and involvement in the making of the iconic statue. That research led to filming interviews with the main participants and obtaining rare footage of the statue being made from 2004-2005. The footage includes speeches by Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the dedication ceremonies. This is a unique view of SJSU history and a narrative that has never been told.
Jason Riles- Editor
Jason started working in theatre as tech crew for the San Jose Stage Company. He started at CreaTV as an intern doing studio and field shoots. After putting in over 900 intern hours, he officially joined the staff as Access Facilitator. After several years learning the ropes as Production Crew in Studio and on location Jason now holds the position of Staff Producer delivering projects for clients such as PG&E and Norcal Public Media. Jason also produces CreaTV’s political show Valley Politics and in his spare time loves to edit videos, play around with different camera lenses & fly his drone. Jason is a passionate advocate of community media & loves a good joke!
Alfonso DeAlba- Previous Executive Director of Associated Students
Alfonso served as the executive director of Associated Students SJSU (A.S.) for more than eight years, from 1997 through early 2006. One of De Alba’s most visible accomplishments was to oversee and coordinate the creation, construction, and dedication of the prominent sculpture on campus depicting Tommie Smith and John Carlos as a reminder and tribute to their role in the 1968 Olympics. Alfonso was a guiding light during the entire process of the making of this documentary.
