This July, CreaTV turned 10 years old. Imagine what was happening with media and technology a decade ago. YouTube was only 2 years old, the iPad didn’t exist and GPS had just become available on our cellphones. A lot has changed since CreaTV first went on the air in July 2008.
CreaTV has been going through a culture shift, one focused on being more relevant and impactful to the San Jose community. As we continue to deepen our connection to serving you, please consider showing your support with a year-end contribution.
When CreaTV started, we strived to stand out among our peers and had a deep commitment to making public access TV a media resource in which San Jose could be proud. In those days, we took great pride in producing high quality content that would stand out on cable TV and not be reflective of old stereotypes like Wayne’s World. We wanted to make meaning of our community through content that rose above a shaky cell phone video or handheld camera. And we accomplished just that.
For more than a decade, CreaTV has leveraged our resources to be one of the most innovative Community Media Centers in the country, but as we know, innovation is a constant process of evaluating and challenging assumptions.
Learning and innovation go hand in hand. The arrogance of success is to think that what you did yesterday will be sufficient for tomorrow.
As we look to our work in 2019, and beyond, I have placed a high priority on evaluating and shifting our organizational culture. The significant change is making sure that we’re engaging our community, listening to their needs, and creating an environment where we’re positioned to be responsive. Your generous contribution is vital to our continued success in adapting to better serve our San Jose.
It’s time we connected with the community on a deeper level and leverage our unique resources in more innovative ways. We’re evolving our youth media camp to provide summer employment opportunities where a young person’s job is learning to create documentaries about issues that are important to them. We’re shifting our media production courses to focus on working with community members who are often ignored by traditional media, and teaching the art of storytelling so that their voices are amplified in new ways. We are shifting our approach to view media making as a tool to empower and embolden members of our community to become changemakers.
We will never be able to compete with content providers like Netflix or Hulu, but we can build meaningful relationships rooted in equity and use media as a tool to change lives. Through this next innovation we’re creating a culture, that no matter where those relationships take us, we will be poised to serve, and to serve with intention.
