Description of Classes
Get the hands-on experience you need to operate cameras, audio and lighting equipment in our studio. You will also learn practical skills for technical directing in the control room. Certification requires your participation on an episode of “Our TV / Your TV” (offered on Monday evenings). Certification in Access Combined is required for anyone who would like to crew on a show produced at CreaTV.
Make your videos come alive with visual effects and motion graphics! Learn the basics of Adobe After Effects, including working with layers, compositing, and titling. Class requires intermediate Mac skills.
An introduction to creating animated effects in video production, including 2D and 3D imaging, advanced layering, keyframing, and a software overview. Class requires intermediate Mac skills.
Beginning Mac Skills
Introduction for those who are new to Mac computers, current PC users, or anyone looking for a refresher in basic Mac operations. Topics will include general functions and features, overview of Microsoft Word, and basic tools for Internet searching, email and social networking.
Control Room Audio
Learn the basics of the Control Room’s Audio Console including the use of microphones and other inputs to record sound from the studio and play it back from the Control Room Rack.
DIY Trainings (Studio A or Flypack)
CreaTV is committed to fostering DIY (“do it yourself”) shows and producers. If you have a potential crew of 4 or more Members, you may be eligible for fast-track training in Studio A and/or Flypack. A customized training will be scheduled specifically for your group (a significant discount in total class fees).
For only $250, your group will receive the studio training needed to crew a DIY show in Studio A. The training fulfills the requirements of Access Combined certification.
For only $500, your group will receive the flypack training needed to check-out the portable studio kit for on-location shoots (3 field cameras and portable switcher). The training fulfills the requirements of Access Combined AND Field Production certifications.
Successful completion of DIY training by all Members is required to check-out CreaTV equipment at DIY rates – and the content must be aired on CreaTV (producer certification and approved project required). For more information, please call 408-295-8815 or email Ryan.Kapowich(at)creatvsj.org.
An introduction to documentary theory, history and genres – with an emphasis on documentaries for television. Topics will include shooting and editing, field lighting, interviewing techniques and story structure. Plus, you will learn how to develop a sense of style in your own productions.
This class will teach you the fundamentals of DVD Studio Pro, including how to import your video, create menus, add chapter markers, and burn a DVD. Class requires intermediate Mac skills.
Field Lighting Kit CERTIFICATION
Field lighting kits are available to our members. Certification on the light kit is required for checkout and can be obtained by completing a scheduled mini-tutorial with the Access Facilitator. Tutorials are offered in 30-minute intervals during the dates and time windows listed.
This class offers a hands-on introduction to filming on-location, including proper set-up and break-down of the equipment, camerawork, lighting, audio techniques, basic interviewing tips and planning for post-production. Certification in Field Production is required for anyone who would like to check-out CreaTV field equipment.
Final Cut Pro 7 – Advanced
Enhance your FCP editing skills by learning advanced video effects such as chroma key filters, motion graphics, key-framing and composite modes. This class will also explore editing with mixed formats and trouble-shooting common problems.
Final Cut Pro 7 – Beginner
Learn basic concepts of non-linear editing with Apple’s Final Cut Pro 7. No experience in Final Cut software is needed, but class will cover the differences between versions. Class requires intermediate MAC skills.
Final Cut Pro X – Beginner
Learn basic concepts of non-linear editing with Apple’s latest release, Final Cut Pro X (10). No experience in Final Cut software is needed, but class will cover the differences between versions. Class requires intermediate MAC skills.
Grow Your Show “Set” for Success
Get expert advice on how to create or enhance your set. Topics will include design and decorating tips, ideas for props, color schemes, layout and lighting for Studio A and B. An important feature for any show is a functional and unique set. Come talk with industry professionals and get help with yours. Sign up now. Space is limited.
Hosting Your TV Show
Award winning talk show host and executive producer of “Bay Area Vista” and “Signature Silicon Valley”, Janice Edwards offers in-studio coaching on booking talent, reading teleprompters, and interviewing guests. She is a published writer and media consultant who has worked for NBC11, CBS5 and KRON4.
An attorney from California Lawyers for the Arts will be on hand to answer all your questions about what you can and cannot do (legally) as a community media producer. Topics may include clearances and permissions to film, music and performance rights, copyright and trademark, and how to establish a non-profit organization.
Lighting & LEDs
Lighting is both an art and a science. Learning how to light your production is a critical part of getting the look you want on camera. This class will give hands-on instruction in the principles, applications and techniques of lighting for studio shoots. Topics covered include 3-point and 4-point lighting, lighting fixtures, tools of the trade, and lighting aesthetics. This class is required for any member who would like to use the LEDs in Studio A.

Orientation & Producing @ CreaTV Combined
Find out what CreaTV San Jose has to offer AND (if you are or become a Member) get your producing certification at the same time!! You will get an overview of our channels, services and policies. Plus, this class will explore strategies to effectively plan a community access television show in our studio or on location. Topics include pre-production, rundowns, underwriting, legal issues and distribution options. Class starts with FREE Orientation followed by optional $45 Producing section.
Our TV / Your TV
CreaTV San Jose members who have taken Access Combined, or who have been previously certified in Intro to TV Studio, are invited to crew on “Our TV / Your TV”. This is a perfect way to hone your skills in the studio. Participation on an episode of “Our TV / Your TV” is required for Access certification.
Introduction to Adobe Photoshop, including how to make selections, working with layers and masks, retouching images and color correction. Class requires intermediate Mac skills.
Learn basic concepts of non-linear editing by navigating menus, making cuts and dissolves, and adding narration, music and simple effects. You will receive the same training as CreaTV members, but NO access certification will be given to non-members. Class requires intermediate Mac skills.
Producer Rountable : FYI on DIY
Fantastic opportunity for current DIY (do-it-yourself) producers and those interested in producing a DIY show, converting their staffed show to a DIY (with reduced rental rates), or being / finding volunteers for DIY productions. Interactive discussion will be led by experienced DIY producers who will share their experiences and provide valuable insights and tips. The event will be taped in Studio A by the crew of Our TV / Your TV
Producing @ CreaTV
Explore strategies to effectively plan a community access television show in our studio or on location. Topics include pre-production, rundowns, underwriting, legal issues, and post-production options. Producing (and/or Producing Master Class) is required to use CreaTV equipment to produce a video or show.
Producing Master Class
Get a first-hand, comprehensive picture of the production process from an award-winning TV producer with extensive professional credits and experience in the industry. Interactive discussion topics will include pre-production, casting, budgets, script development and distribution options. A representative from Californial Lawyers For The Arts will also be on hand to discuss and answer questions about copyright, releases and other legal issues. This class or the Combined Orientation & Producing class is required to use CreaTV equipment to produce a show.
Find out what it takes to conceptualize your video from start to finish, including basic terminology and formats used in scriptwriting, step-by-step story development and narrative techniques.
Professional media trainers will be on hand to give you invaluable advice and practical skills in using social networking tools – such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter – to promote yourself, your show and your message.
Members who are certified in Studio & Control Room will learn how to TD in Studio B – which will qualify you to use Studio B at reduced DIY rental rates.
Kamla produces The Kamla Show for Community Channel 15, which airs Sundays at 5:30pm.
