San Jose, CA, September 13, 2013 — CreaTV San Jose announced today that television legend Ed Asner will appear at The 2013 CreaTiVe Awards gala to accept the Leigh Weimers’ Community Media Champion Award. The fourth annual awards gala, honoring Bay Area videomakers, will be held at the California Theatre in San Jose on January 18, 2014.
The Leigh Weimers’ Community Media Champion Award recognizes individuals who advocate for the local voice. Whether through public policy work, or staunch support of independent media, they ensure that community voices are represented in the mainstream media.
Ed Asner defines the community media champion. He is passionate about the importance of public access channels and free speech. In 2009, he publically condemned the actions of Time Warner Cable, Inc., for closing 12 public access studios, operating 14 community channels, in Los Angeles and chastised the Los Angeles City Council for negligence in hoarding franchise fees set aside for public access. In a Full Disclosure Network video, Ed said the closures demonstrated the “clamp down of free speech and thought and press in this country.” Since 2009, he has continued to stand up for public access and free speech anywhere in the country where it is threatened.
The 2011 Award went to California State Senator Joe Simitian and City of San Jose PIO, Tom Manheim. The 2012 Award recipient was Bob Kieve, the President and Founder of Empire Broadcasting. The 2013 Award, being presented to Ed Asner, is the third annual.
Singer/songwriter, Rudy Parris, a seasoned performer, with 20 years as the opening act for Merle Haggard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Williams Jr., BB King and Bo Didley, etc., and seven years with Buck Owens, will perform a song from his new album. Rudy’s big break came as a finalist on Season 3 of NBC’s The Voice. His blind audition of The Police song “Every Breath You Take” was one of the most downloaded songs on iTunes that season.
