To our beloved San Jose community,
As we move through the second month of dealing with the COVID crisis, I want to share with you an update on CreaTV’s response and thoughts about the future. From the beginning, our number one priority was keeping our staff, members, and clients safe and healthy. This meant taking the unprecedented step of closing our facility doors, ceasing all in-person productions, and not checking out equipment. These decisions challenged the organization to think creatively about the active role we should play to best serve San Jose in these challenging times.
I’m excited to share some updates about what we’ve been doing:
Our first significant decision was to open up one of our TV channels (Channel 30) to the community in a new way. The Outlet was designed to be a repository of all of the creativity San Jose has to offer and a way for us all to feel more connected and inspired. Anyone can remotely submit a video to share with the community without being a member and the rest of the schedule is filled with as much informative and timely content as possible.
So far, we’ve had more than 40 submissions, and we now have the ability to go live with any virtual happenings, Zoom events, or social media performances. We’re curating much of this content on our YouTube page where you can see the best of The Outlet any time you like. If you have content you’d like to share or a live event that you think the community would enjoy, please let us know!
We have started to offer remote classes and they seem to be a hit! We’d love to learn more about what you’re interested in learning. Take this quick survey (3 questions!) and help us serve you better. Upcoming In House Production classesinclude cell phone production, basic editing, podcasting, and basic storytelling. Check our website or social media for updates.
We will be an event called Expanding the Signal on May 19th from 4:30-5:30pm. There’s no agenda or format. It’s just an opportunity for you and other folks who are interested in CreaTV and community media, to ask us questions and to share ideas on how CreaTV can meet the changing needs of our community. Keep your eye on our social media to register!
We have updated our In House Production services for our current content creators, members, and nonprofits who are trying to get their message out while social distancing. The options range from very basic to advanced and are designed to meet any budget size. Check out the options here! (need links)
CreaTV continues to support the City of San Jose and Santa Clara and County in covering and broadcasting their important meetings.
On our Classrooms Channel 28, we are airing San Jose Unified School District classes in Spanish and English.
As we look to the summer, we are thinking about how we will function as the restrictions on business activity start to loosen. CreaTV will likely bring people in slowly, for specific activities, like productions or small classes, but we will have to adjust how we do that work. We will minimize the number of people in the facility, have cleaning protocols, wear masks/gloves, and be smart about how we do our work. Every business, nonprofit, and government entity will
be doing the same to continue to keep us all healthy and safe, and we will follow suit.
Lastly, we are continuing to evaluate the financial impact on the organization. We have lost the majority of our earned income through production services, classes, and partnership activity during the shelter in place. The cable industry has also been hit hard by the economic insecurities. Since approximately half of our revenue comes from a portion of cable TV subscribers, CreaTV has also suffered a loss of revenue from this vital source. Despite those challenges, we have been able to pull off of our reserves, continue our future funded programs, and apply for a small business loan. Thankfully, we have not had to make any significant changes to staffing or services at this time, but we will not be able to weather this storm without the continued support of our community. Please consider becoming a member of CreaTV, renewing your membership, or making a generous contribution today. We have convenient ways for you to donate, including becoming a monthly sustainer! Whatever you can give, we greatly appreciate your support.
Please stay healthy and safe.
